World Wetlands Day

2 February highlights the value of wetlands for life and water. Cambodia’s lakes, flooded forests and coastal wetlands are closely connected with community livelihoods.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 2 February each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 2 February, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

The date recalls adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971. Global observance began in 1997, and the UN General Assembly recognised the day in 2021. The UN’s historical account traces a progression from an international agreement to public participation in understanding wetlands, including those in Cambodia.

Meaning

The day recalls the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971. Wetlands are not unused land without value: they provide habitats and form part of water systems. At Prek Toal, flooded forests and community livelihoods illustrate the connection between nature and daily life. Conservation needs to consider the people who depend on these places as well as wildlife.

Ask children what they notice and save questions for later, rather than collecting animals or removing plants.

What you can do

Learn the name of a nearby wetland and listen to people who live there. Avoid litter and disturbance to birds or nesting areas. Obtain permission for a clean-up and keep children out of unfamiliar water. A guided visit can support learning without treating a protected habitat as an unrestricted recreation site. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; consult the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree for official days off.
