World Water Day
22 March focuses on freshwater and its management. Access to suitable water is an everyday concern for households.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 22 March each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 22 March, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The UN established World Water Day through resolution 47/193 in 1992 following the Rio conference; the first observance was 22 March 1993. UN-Water links this history to attention to freshwater. In Cambodia, it provides an occasion to learn about safe water, responsible use and community needs.
Meaning
The day encourages attention to water sources, use and unequal access. In Cambodia, rivers, lakes, wells and piped supplies play different roles depending on location. Annual campaign themes change, so consult current organisers’ materials rather than assuming an older slogan remains the official focus. A household conversation can connect the global observance with a familiar question: where does the water we use actually come from?
Elders can describe earlier water sources while distinguishing memory from an assessment of present water quality.
What you can do
Check household leaks and keep waste out of drains and water sources. Listen to families who spend time collecting water, without blaming people who have few alternatives. Follow local notices about water quality rather than judging safety by appearance alone. A community discussion can identify a practical problem and the responsible service. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
