World Teachers’ Day
5 October recognises teachers’ contributions. It also invites attention to the support teachers need to teach well.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 5 October each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 5 October, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
UNESCO records that World Teachers’ Day began in 1994. It commemorates the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, adopted on 5 October 1966, addressing preparation, rights, responsibilities and working conditions. This history connects appreciation with support for education, rather than competition over gifts.
Meaning and background
The day commemorates the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. Cambodian students can express appreciation to teachers who have helped them. Support also involves listening to concerns about resources, time and learning conditions, rather than giving gifts alone. One teacher should not be blamed for every difficulty in an education system, and recognition should include the less visible work that helps learners participate.
Include learners unable to give gifts without comparing costs or identifying those who did not contribute.
Thoughtful appreciation
Write a message naming something a teacher helped you learn, or help care for shared learning materials. Gifts should be voluntary and follow school rules, without pressuring families to spend. Protect learners’ privacy when sharing a positive story. Ask the school about its programme rather than assuming classes are cancelled. This is not automatically a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
