World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
8 May recognises humanitarian work and volunteers. Assistance based on need and respect for dignity are central themes.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 8 May each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 8 May, during the transition from dry to rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
According to the IFRC, the first International Red Cross Day was held on 8 May 1948, the birthday of Henry Dunant, a founder of the movement. The current title was adopted in 1984. This history connects the day with humanitarian service and volunteers who respect the dignity of people receiving assistance.
Meaning
The day is associated with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and assistance to people affected by disasters and crises. In Cambodia, it can introduce volunteer work and family preparedness. Volunteers have different roles and training, so do not assume that anyone wearing an emblem can provide every kind of service. Humanitarian help should protect the dignity of the person receiving it.
Explain to children that seeking help promptly is sensible and that emergency instructions should be followed.
Helping responsibly
Seek a first-aid course from a qualified provider or ask an official organisation about volunteering. Verify a fundraiser before donating and obtain consent before photographing people receiving help. Assistance should not depend on someone offering public praise or sharing a private story. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree determines official days off.
