International Day for Monuments and Sites

18 April, often called World Heritage Day, promotes care for heritage. In Cambodia it concerns famous temples as well as local historical places.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 18 April each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 18 April, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

ICOMOS proposed the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 1982, and UNESCO endorsed the idea in 1983. ICOMOS explains its purpose as raising awareness of heritage’s diversity and vulnerability. In Cambodia this can include temples, historic buildings and places valued by communities, alongside famous sites.

Meaning

Promoted by ICOMOS, the International Day for Monuments and Sites encourages learning about conservation. Heritage value is not limited to places on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Old buildings, monasteries and sites important to local memory can also be studied. Angkor is a major Cambodian example, but it does not represent the entirety of Khmer heritage or the experiences of every community.

When recording community stories, ask what may be shared and what the speaker wishes to keep private.

Visiting respectfully

Read site instructions and listen to custodians. Do not climb restricted structures, carve names or remove stones. Ask before photographing worship or community members. An elder may help identify a local building and its history; record where the story came from. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday, and an observance does not imply free admission. Official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
