World Environment Day
5 June encourages action on environmental concerns. Continued care matters more than a one-day display.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 5 June each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 5 June, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The UN established World Environment Day in 1972 in the context of the Stockholm conference, and the first observance took place in 1973. UNEP’s history traces its development into a public platform with changing annual themes and hosts. Cambodian participation can connect that purpose with sustained community work.
Meaning and background
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, the day has been observed since 1973. Themes and host countries change. Cambodian activities can connect learning with local waste, resource use and natural surroundings. Choose an issue with clear responsibility and a way to follow progress, rather than assuming a slogan or a large attendance figure establishes a lasting environmental improvement.
Afterwards, ask what improved and who will maintain it, recognising cleaners and waste collectors’ work.
What you can do
Reduce unnecessary packaging or coordinate waste collection with the responsible service. A tree-planting activity needs a suitable site and someone to care for the seedlings afterwards. Do not burn waste just to make a place appear tidy quickly. Supervise children and keep hazardous objects out of their tasks. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government sets official days off annually by sub-decree.
