World AIDS Day

1 December raises awareness of HIV and AIDS. Non-discrimination and confidentiality are central to supportive participation.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 1 December each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 1 December, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

WHO and UNAIDS record the beginning of World AIDS Day in 1988. It provides time to remember those who have died and stand with people living with HIV. This history supports accurate information and reduced discrimination; participation in an event reveals nothing about an individual’s health status.

Meaning

The day remembers people who have died and expresses solidarity with people living with HIV. HIV and AIDS are not interchangeable terms. In Cambodia, reliable health information can help reduce misunderstanding and stigma. Avoid language that blames or diminishes someone because of their health status. Awareness activities should support dignity and access to information rather than attempt to identify who may be living with HIV.

Respectful support

Do not disclose a person’s status or publish their image without informed consent. Questions about testing, prevention or care should be directed to qualified services and current official information. Do not promote an unverified remedy or promise a cure. Supporting someone can begin with listening and respecting confidentiality. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
