Water Festival, Moon Salutation and Ak Ambok

The Water Festival brings together boat racing and traditions concerning water, the moon and the rice harvest. Celebrations around the full moon of Kattik highlight community cooperation and the skill of boat crews.

When it happens

The three days fall on the fourteenth and fifteenth waxing days and first waning day of Kattik, near the end of the rains. Official dates are 23–25 November 2026 and 12–14 November 2027. Day one opens scheduled racing; day two is the full-moon observance associated with moon salutation and Ak Ambok; day three continues and concludes scheduled racing. Illuminated-boat programmes and public access follow the organisers’ annual announcements. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

Meaning and timing

The festival is celebrated around the fifteenth waxing day of Kattik. It is associated with the seasonal waters near the end of the rains and with the lives of river communities. The Tonle Sap River changes flow direction seasonally as water levels in the Mekong system change. This is a hydrological process, however, and should not be described as an event guaranteed to occur on the festival’s exact date.

History

Boats and river life have a long place in Khmer history. Angkor, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1992, includes the Bayon of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, with reliefs of daily life and activity on the water. This art provides historical context for Khmer water culture, without establishing an exact founding year for today’s three-day race programme. The present festival joins royal tradition, boat communities and seasonal celebration.

Racing and illuminated boats

Crews representing pagodas, villages or other communities train together for the races. Paddling requires shared rhythm, endurance and cooperation rather than individual strength alone. Some programmes include illuminated boats after dark. Provincial events and the capital’s celebrations can follow different schedules, and individual events may change or be suspended. Check the current organisers’ announcements instead of assuming that a large race or procession takes place everywhere each year.

Moon salutation and Ak Ambok

On the full-moon night, some families arrange flattened rice, bananas, coconut and other offerings for moon salutation. Ak Ambok takes its name from the rice preparation associated with the occasion. Such practices can express gratitude for the harvest and a family’s hopes. They are cultural and religious observances, not reliable predictions of a crop or promises of good fortune. Ask a host about the local sequence of the ceremony.

Enjoying the festival safely

When watching with children, agree on a meeting place and keep a contact number available. Stay back from unprotected river edges and observe barriers and crowd-control instructions. Help older relatives find shade and a manageable route home. Cheer crews respectfully, leave emergency access clear and take rubbish to proper collection points. If travelling by boat, follow the operator’s safety instructions and use an appropriate life jacket.

Understanding the community behind a boat

Watching a crew can lead to learning about the community behind it: where it comes from and who helps with training, meals or transport. These questions show children that an achievement involves many people. Speak to a crew only when it will not interrupt preparations, ask before photographing and avoid promises of support you cannot fulfil. Cheer without insulting competitors. Plan an exit before crowds build, and let tired relatives leave early rather than requiring everyone to finish the programme.

Work and days off

The Water Festival normally has three public holidays. Their official dates are set by the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree. A holiday listing and confirmation that particular races will take place are separate matters; verify both before booking a journey.
