Valentine’s Day
14 February offers an occasion to express affection and care. Respect and consent matter more than the price of a gift.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 14 February each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 14 February, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The Library of Congress documents greeting-card customs and the growth of Valentine observance, particularly as commercial cards spread in the 1800s. The histories of saints named Valentine and the development of a romantic celebration cannot be reduced to a single fully verified origin story. Cambodian participation can centre on consent and respect without making gifts obligatory.
Meaning and background
Sending cards and affectionate messages has a long history in some countries, and customs have changed over time. Origin stories vary, so one legend should not be presented as a fully established explanation. In Cambodia, some people choose flowers, a message or time with someone they care about, while others do not observe the day. Participation is a personal choice.
Care also means listening and respecting a refusal; declining a celebration does not establish how someone feels.
Care with respect
Write a sincere message, prepare a meal or contact someone who feels isolated. Do not pressure anyone to accept a gift, agree to a date or share private images. Affection does not require spending beyond your means. Ask before publishing a photograph of another person. Valentine’s Day is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree determines official days off.
