Precept Days and Uposatha
Precept days offer time for ethical conduct, learning and training the mind. People unable to attend a monastery can also practise at home.
When it happens
Precept days recur throughout the year, generally on the eighth and fifteenth waxing days, eighth waning day and final waning day, either the fourteenth or fifteenth, in each Khmer lunar month. Eight-precept practice commonly lasts a day and a night under the monastery’s guidance. In both 2026 and 2027 this is a monthly cycle, rather than a single annual date; consult the app’s individual entries and the monastery’s notices. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
Meaning
In Theravada Buddhism, Uposatha is an opportunity to renew ethical commitments and examine one’s conduct. Some lay followers maintain the five precepts in everyday life and undertake the eight precepts on observance days. The aim is a more attentive and restrained life, rather than a competition over personal purity. Beginners can ask a trusted monastic or teacher to explain the commitments before undertaking them.
History
Uposatha is grounded in early Buddhist scripture, including Anguttara Nikaya 8.41 on its eight factors. The Pali Text Society explains that the chronicles place the writing down of the Theravada canon in the first century BCE, after generations of oral transmission. This dates a stage in preservation of the texts, rather than the establishment of Cambodian precept days.
Timing and variations
Cambodian practice generally marks the eighth and fifteenth waxing days, the eighth waning day and the final waning day, which can be the fourteenth or fifteenth. These traditional calendar dates need not match the precise astronomical moment of a moon phase. For a monastery visit, follow the Khmer lunar calendar and the monastery’s notices rather than automatically substituting another country’s observance schedule.
Precepts and practice
The five precepts concern abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech and intoxicants that cause heedlessness. The eight-precept observance includes additional restraint, including celibacy and not eating at improper times. Learn their meaning before making a commitment. People with medical needs should seek suitable guidance about food and treatment; a calendar article cannot determine an individual’s health requirements or replace a teacher’s explanation.
At a monastery or at home
Possible activities include offering a meal, listening to Dhamma, reading a teaching or sitting quietly for a manageable period. At home, practise careful speech, help an older relative or reduce distracting phone use. If you hope to stay overnight, ask the monastery about accommodation and its daily rules beforehand. Respect quiet areas, avoid photographing people in meditation without consent and do not pressure relatives to undertake the same observance.
Choosing a sustainable practice
A beginner can choose a short, clearly understood practice with suitable guidance: pause before speaking in anger or listen to family without checking a phone. Ethical conduct need not be reserved for observance days. If a commitment is missed, examine why and begin again without excessive self-blame. Do not use your practice to judge someone else. Carers may have little free time, yet patient care also has value. Ask about the meaning and application of additional precepts before undertaking them.
Work and days off
Regular precept days are not automatically public holidays. The Royal Government sets the official holiday list by annual sub-decree. Someone working that day can choose a short period of reflection before or after work and continue practising ethical conduct throughout ordinary responsibilities.
