Kan Ben and Pchum Ben

Kan Ben and Pchum Ben honour ancestors and relatives who have died. Families make offerings, support the monastic community and dedicate merit according to Buddhist belief.

When it happens

The fifteen-day observance runs from the first through the fifteenth waning day of Phutrobot during the rainy season. Kan Ben days 1–14 are successive offering days; the fifteenth waning day is Pchum Ben itself. Official leave runs 10–12 October 2026 and 29 September–1 October 2027. These three-day leave periods are distinct from the full religious observance and from its single culminating lunar day. Check each monastery’s offering roster. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

The lunar tables consulted place Kan Ben days 1–14 on 27 September–10 October 2026 and Pchum Ben on 11 October. In 2027, Kan Ben runs 16–29 September and Pchum Ben falls on 30 September. Confirm the monastery’s programme.

Meaning and season

The observance runs through the waning half of the Khmer lunar month of Phutrobot, from the first to the fifteenth waning day. Kan Ben refers to the preceding days of observance; Pchum Ben is the culmination on the fifteenth waning day. The three public holiday entries in a work calendar are not the entire religious season. Families can choose suitable days to attend a pagoda according to their circumstances.

History

Pchum Ben’s history joins Khmer remembrance of ancestors with Buddhist dedication of merit. John Clifford Holt’s study in Southeast Asian Studies records a tradition linking the organisation of the fifteen-day rite to King Ang Duong’s reign, 1848–1860. The study also discusses evidence of earlier practices, so this reign should not be treated as the invention of all ancestral remembrance. The Tirokudda Kanda supplies a Buddhist textual background for dedicating merit to departed relatives.

Remembrance and belief

Remembering the dead can help younger relatives learn family history and appreciate earlier generations. Within Buddhist belief, generosity and the dedication of merit are meaningful ways of remembering departed relatives. Accounts of hungry spirits and the reception of merit belong to religious teaching and popular belief. They should be presented as such, without frightening children or suggesting that someone unable to visit a monastery will necessarily suffer misfortune.

At the pagoda and at home

At a monastery, participants may offer food and practical supplies to the monks, undertake precepts and listen to a Dhamma talk. Some communities hold an early-morning rice-ball offering custom, following their pagoda’s arrangements. Foods such as ansom may be prepared for family gatherings or giving. Neither a particular menu nor one identical ritual is required of every household. Ask the monastery about its schedule, offering arrangements and any local guidance before attending.

Participation and care

Invite an elder to share an ancestor’s name or story and record it only with permission. Help older relatives with transport and seating. Give within your means rather than borrowing money to match another family’s contribution. Dress respectfully, follow the monastery’s meal schedule and keep prepared food clean. Arrange a meeting point if children accompany you, remove litter and allow time to rest after an early start or a long journey.

Planning a family remembrance

Discuss attendance and food quantities before visiting the pagoda, and share preparations so one person is not overburdened. Ask an elder to check the names of relatives being remembered. Preserve old photographs carefully and seek permission before publishing them. Answer children’s questions in age-appropriate language without frightening them. Someone recently bereaved may need quiet rather than a large gathering. Caring for living relatives and remembering those who have died can be part of the same compassionate occasion.

Days off

Pchum Ben normally has public holidays, but the whole Kan Ben period is not a continuous statutory break. The Royal Government sets the official days by annual sub-decree. Confirm workplace arrangements and transport availability, especially when returning to a province.
