National Fishery Day

1 July is Cambodia’s National Fishery Day. It promotes care for fisheries resources connected with food and community livelihoods.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 1 July each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 1 July, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

FAO records that the government declared 1 July National Fish Day in 2002. AKP confirms annual observance began in 2003 to encourage sustainable conservation and development of fishery resources. This history connects symbolic releases with habitat protection and long-term resource management.

Meaning

Fish and aquatic systems are important to Cambodian life. Commemorations and conservation activities may be arranged in different provinces at different times. This is a Cambodian national observance, not a United Nations day simply because the app places it in an international-style category. Learning about habitats and responsible fishing matters alongside ceremonial fish releases and should inform how activities are planned.

Taking part carefully

Listen to fisheries specialists and fishing communities. Do not buy fish for independent release without knowing the species, health status and suitability of the location. An unsuitable release can damage the environment. Helping protect water and habitats may be a better contribution than arranging an unplanned ceremony. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
