National Arbor Day

9 July is Cambodia’s Arbor Day. Planting is meaningful when trees have suitable sites and continuing care.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 9 July each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 9 July, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

AKP records that King Norodom Sihanouk initiated Arbor Day in 1952, linking royal service with public participation in forest care. The 2002 Forestry Law also provides for Arbor Day on 9 July. These milestones give context to a tradition whose purpose requires continued care beyond the planting ceremony.

Meaning

Arbor Day connects royal custom with care for trees, forests and livelihoods. The national ceremony can take place in different locations, while local activities may follow their own schedules. This is a Cambodian observance, distinct from the International Day of Forests on 21 March. Caring for an established tree also fits the occasion; participation need not always involve planting another seedling.

Planting and care

Obtain the site owner’s permission, choose a suitable species and consider space near roads or power lines. Assign responsibility for watering and continued care. Children can help with tasks suited to their strength under adult supervision. Count surviving trees and follow-up care rather than using the first day’s planting total as the only measure. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
