When it happens
The app follows the United States observance on the second Sunday in May, rather than a universally shared date. It falls on 10 May 2026 and 9 May 2027. The observance lasts one day around Cambodia’s transition from dry to rainy season; families may choose a suitable time to visit or call. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The Library of Congress records Anna Jarvis’s role in organising a remembrance in 1908 and campaigning for a national observance. In 1914 the United States recognised the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, a rule preserved in federal law. This explains the date used by the app without suggesting that gratitude to mothers in Khmer families began with that designation.
Meaning and calendar
The date used here follows a widely known United States observance; other countries use different dates. Some Cambodian families use the day to thank a mother or someone who has provided care. Respect those who have lost a mother, have a difficult relationship or prefer not to participate publicly. A shared calendar date does not mean every family experiences the occasion in the same way.
Continuing help after the day can express gratitude and reduce a burden carried by one person alone.
Thoughtful care
Ask whether rest, help with housework or time together would be welcome. Do not leave a mother to organise every part of her own celebration. A modest gift or sincere message can be enough when appropriate to the relationship. Ask before sharing family photographs. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
