Mid-Autumn Festival
The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth Chinese lunar month. Reunion and mooncakes are important features for many families.
When it happens
Mid-Autumn Festival falls on day fifteen of month eight in the Chinese lunisolar calendar: 25 September 2026 and 15 September 2027, during Cambodia’s rainy season. The main gathering usually occupies an evening, while mooncake gifts may be exchanged beforehand. The autumn name refers to the tradition’s seasonal setting and does not describe Cambodia’s seasons. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre’s historical account links eighth-month, fifteenth-day moon rites to records from the Tang period, 618–907. Moon observance, reunion and food customs developed through different periods and communities. Moon legends should remain identified as stories rather than evidence for an exact founding date. For observing households in Cambodia, the occasion offers time to remember relatives near and far.
Meaning and calendar
The festival is associated with the full moon, reunion and thoughts of relatives living far away. Its autumn name comes from the seasonal context of China; it does not imply that Cambodia has the same seasons. It is distinct from Khmer moon salutation and Ak Ambok during the Water Festival. Follow the Chinese calendar rather than substituting a Khmer lunar month simply because its number appears similar.
In Cambodian households
Some Chinese-Cambodian households gather, share mooncakes and tea or prepare offerings according to their beliefs. Children may enjoy lanterns where a family or community arranges them. These activities are not universal requirements. Stories associated with the moon can be shared as traditional tales. Avoid turning a popular story about mooncakes into a precise historical claim unless reliable evidence supports the particular account.
Thoughtful participation
Calling a distant relative can express the reunion theme even when travel is impossible. Keep gifts affordable and do not treat an expensive box as a measure of respect. Ask about ingredients and offer portions suited to people’s preferences and needs. Choose safe lanterns and avoid releasing flame-powered lanterns that may start fires. Respect those who decline a religious act and reduce waste from elaborate packaging.
Reunion across distance
When relatives cannot meet, arrange a call at a convenient time. Invite elders to share a favourite custom without demanding private memories. Children can make paper lanterns with adult help and safe lighting. Families need not copy large events from another country: attentive conversation can preserve the reunion theme without expensive gifts.
Work and days off
Mid-Autumn Festival is not generally a Cambodian public holiday. The Royal Government sets official holidays each year by sub-decree. Private gatherings can be arranged around family availability; confirm any community programme with its organiser before making a journey.
