Meak Bochea

Meak Bochea recalls an assembly of arahants and teaching on avoiding evil, cultivating good and purifying the mind. Cambodian Buddhists observe it at the full moon of Meak.

When it happens

Meak Bochea is observed for one day on the fifteenth waxing day of Meak, in the dry season. AKP documents the 2 February 2026 celebration. The lunar calendar consulted gives 21 February 2027 as a planning date; confirm it against the official Khmer calendar and monastery programme before announcing a ceremony. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

Meaning

Meak Bochea is observed on the fifteenth waxing day of Meak. In Theravada tradition, it recalls the unarranged gathering of 1,250 arahants in the Buddha’s presence. This account should be identified as a traditional religious commemoration. Readers do not need a claimed exact civil date or historical year for the ancient gathering in order to understand the festival’s place in Cambodian Buddhist life.

History

Buddhist tradition associates Meak Bochea with the unarranged gathering of 1,250 arahants and the Ovada Patimokkha. This is a religious account, without a securely documented ancient civil date. A dated modern record is AKP’s report and photographs of the ceremony at Phnom Preah Reach Troap on 2 February 2026, showing its continuing place in Cambodian Buddhist life. Dhammapada chapter 14 provides a textual companion on avoiding harm, cultivating good and purifying the mind.

The central teaching

The occasion is associated with the Ovada Patimokkha, a concise presentation of Buddhist practice. In ordinary language, its message concerns refraining from harmful actions, cultivating good and training the mind. Listening to a teaching provides time to examine speech as well as behaviour. This is relevant to family disagreements, classroom relationships and working life, rather than being confined to what happens inside a monastery on one special day.

Observance

Participants may offer food, undertake precepts and listen to Dhamma. Some monasteries organise an evening circumambulation, while others emphasise chanting or teaching. Before accompanying a child or an older person, ask about starting times, duration and seating. Do not assume every pagoda offers an identical programme. Those unable to attend can read a teaching, reflect quietly at home or choose a practical act of kindness.

Respect and daily application

Choose a specific, achievable practice, such as speaking without insults or allowing another person to finish explaining their concern. Offer help with arrangements or cleaning after asking the organisers. Wear suitable clothing, silence your phone and take care around candles. Respect people whose participation differs from yours. Neither the size of a donation nor the length of a visit provides a fair measure of another person’s sincerity.

From listening to action

After a teaching, choose one question, such as how speech can hurt another person. Give everyone time to respond without turning the conversation into an accusation. Adults can model apologising for unkind words. Children can suggest a helpful action that costs nothing. If practising meditation, start with a period suited to age and health rather than forcing a long sitting as a display. Keep unfamiliar Dhamma terms as questions to ask a knowledgeable teacher at a suitable time.

Work and days off

Meak Bochea is an important religious observance, but it should not automatically be treated as a public holiday every year. Consult the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree and workplace notices. If the day is a working day, a brief observance outside work can still be meaningful.
