Khmer New Year
Khmer New Year brings families together to honour elders and renew Khmer traditions. Home and pagoda observances combine celebration with generosity and reflection.
When it happens
Khmer New Year takes place in mid-April, during the dry season before the main rice-growing season. Its transition is set by the solar reckoning in the Moha Songkran almanac. The public holiday dates are 14–16 April in both 2026 and 2027. Day one, Moha Songkran, welcomes the new year; day two, Wanabat, emphasises sharing and giving; day three, Loeung Sak, advances the year count. Consult that year’s almanac for the precise transition time. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
Meaning and timing
Khmer New Year falls around the middle of April, following the solar transition recorded in the traditional Moha Songkran almanac. It is not a festival fixed simply by a full moon. For many families, it is a time to return to their home province, reconnect with parents and rest from work. Its importance lies in renewing relationships, sharing what one can and carrying customs between generations.
History
Khmer New Year has been passed down through households, pagodas and communities, bringing together respect for elders, Buddhist giving and traditional games. A dated modern recognition of this living heritage is UNESCO’s 2015 inscription of tugging rituals and games, including Cambodian practice. That is a recognition date, rather than a founding date for the game or New Year. UNESCO describes the community bonds sustained through these rituals and games.
The three days and their customs
The named days are Moha Songkran, welcoming the new year; Wanabat, associated with giving and helping others; and Loeung Sak, marking the advancement of the year count. Some households prepare offerings to welcome the new year’s deity according to traditional belief. These practices express hopes and cultural identity; they do not guarantee fortune. The timing and emphasis of individual ceremonies vary between communities and households.
Observance in Cambodia
Preparations often include cleaning the home and cooking for relatives and visitors. Buddhist families may offer food at a pagoda, listen to teachings, build sand stupas or join a Buddha-image bathing ceremony where the monastery arranges one. Children and adults can ask elders’ forgiveness and offer good wishes. Traditional games such as bos angkunh, chol chhoung and tug-of-war, together with community dancing, create opportunities for people of different ages to participate.
Taking part respectfully
Ask an older relative to explain a family custom and help with cooking or cleaning afterwards. At a pagoda, dress modestly and follow instructions about shoes and sacred spaces. Obtain consent before splashing anyone with water, and never throw water at moving vehicles. Plan journeys with rest stops, wear a helmet when riding and arrange a sober driver. Include relatives who cannot travel through a visit or a telephone call, without making expensive gifts an obligation.
Planning for different generations
Before the holiday, discuss who will travel, who will remain home and who needs assistance. Share shopping, cooking and cleaning so that organisers also have time to rest. An older relative may prefer a quieter pagoda visit with comfortable seating. Children can learn one traditional game with safe guidance from an adult. A telephone greeting can include relatives living far away. Ask before publishing a group photograph, and help collect reusable materials after the celebration.
Work and days off
Khmer New Year is normally a public holiday. The Royal Government’s annual sub-decree determines the actual days off and their number. Shops, transport operators and essential services may follow different arrangements, so confirm bookings and opening hours in advance.
