Kathina Robe-Offering Season
Kathina is a formal offering of robe cloth or robes to an eligible monastic community under the Vinaya. In Cambodia it also brings communities together to support a pagoda after the retreat.
When it happens
The Kathina season lasts one lunar month, from the first waning day of Assuj through the fifteenth waxing day of Kattik, as the rains give way to the dry season. Each eligible monastery schedules its ceremony within that window under Vinaya requirements. The season’s opening does not mean all monasteries hold Kathina that day. For 2026 and 2027, consult the Khmer calendar for the civil-date window and ask the monastery for its actual ceremony date. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
The lunar tables give planning windows of 27 October–24 November 2026 and 16 October–13 November 2027. Confirm against the official Khmer calendar and monastery before announcing a ceremony.
Timing and meaning
In the Khmer calendar, the Kathina season extends from the first waning day of Assuj to the fifteenth waxing day of Kattik. A monastery sets its particular ceremony within this period, subject to the requirements of the monastic discipline. A calendar entry marking the beginning of the season does not mean every pagoda holds Kathina that day. Confirm the chosen date directly with the monastery or its recognised organisers.
History
Vinaya Khandhaka 7 supplies Kathina’s foundational account: thirty monks travel after the retreat, followed by the allowance concerning Kathina cloth. The account explains the relationship between retreat residence, the Sangha and robes. Oral transmission preceded the canon’s writing down in the first century BCE, according to the history described by the Pali Text Society. Cambodian processions and community arrangements continue with local variations; an ordinary robe donation is not automatically Kathina.
Kathina and ordinary giving
Kathina has a specific Vinaya meaning and concerns a community that has completed the retreat under the relevant conditions. An ordinary robe donation is not necessarily Kathina. Lay supporters need not attempt to settle complex disciplinary questions themselves, but can ask the resident monks for an explanation. Religious hopes associated with giving should remain clearly distinguished from claims that a donation will guarantee wealth, luck or a measurable spiritual reward.
Arrangements in Cambodia
Committees and donors may arrange a procession, a formal offering and practical support according to local custom. Contributions can include money, food, supplies or help with preparations. Monasteries do not all have the same needs. Ask before purchasing goods, avoid unnecessary packaging and recognise the value of modest contributions and voluntary work. Public display should not determine who is welcomed or whose support is considered worthwhile.
Giving responsibly
Give within your means and avoid borrowing or pressuring colleagues. Check who is collecting funds and ask for a clear explanation of their intended use. Respect ceremonial spaces and keep routes accessible for older participants. If a procession uses public roads, obey traffic instructions, avoid overloaded vehicles and consider neighbouring households when using loudspeakers. Helping with cleaning afterwards is a useful way to contribute without spending additional money.
Clarity in group contributions
A group collection should clearly identify the monastery, purpose and payment arrangements. Participants should be able to ask questions without being accused of lacking faith. Contributions must remain voluntary, and names or amounts should not be published without consent. Afterwards, provide a simple account of what was offered while respecting donors and recipients. Ask organisers how remaining supplies should be used. Children can learn that sharing takes many forms and is not measured by money alone.
Work and days off
A monastery’s Kathina ceremony does not itself create a public holiday. Official days off are established by the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree. Plan participation around employment and family responsibilities, and distinguish a month-long religious season from a continuous holiday or a single universally shared ceremony date.
