International Youth Day
12 August highlights young people’s participation in society. Listening should be accompanied by genuine opportunities to contribute.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 12 August each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 12 August, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
In 1999 the UN General Assembly endorsed 12 August as International Youth Day through resolution 54/120, following the 1998 conference of ministers responsible for youth. UN history connects the day with participation and opportunity. In Cambodia, that purpose supports involving young people in choosing the issues themselves.
Meaning
The day invites attention to young people’s opportunities and concerns. Cambodian discussions can address education, skills, work and community participation. Young people do not form one group with identical experiences. Rural and urban residents, those with disabilities and those with caring responsibilities may need different forms of support. A useful activity asks who is missing from the discussion as well as who is already speaking.
Meaningful participation
Let young participants help choose a topic and lead a task with clear support. Do not use them only for photographs or assume consent to unpaid work. Respect time, safety and private information. Mentoring between younger and older people can involve learning in both directions. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
