International Women’s Day

8 March recognises women’s achievements and promotes equal rights. It invites attention to opportunities and shared responsibilities at home, in education and at work.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 8 March each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 8 March, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

UN history places the day’s roots in women’s rights and labour movements of the early twentieth century. The UN began observing it in 1975, and the General Assembly adopted a resolution on a day for women’s rights and international peace in 1977. This history connects celebration with education, work opportunities and social participation, beyond flowers alone.

Meaning

The day concerns women’s rights, dignity and participation. Flowers can express appreciation, but listening and improving equal opportunities also matter. Cambodian families can discuss continued education, shared care work and safety. Avoid assuming that every woman has the same ambitions or needs; meaningful recognition leaves room for different ages, occupations, circumstances and choices.

What you can do

Ask women in a family or workplace what prevents participation and address practical barriers where possible. Share household tasks fairly instead of making women responsible for all the celebration’s preparations. Obtain consent before sharing personal stories or photographs, and do not make a public activity a reason to pressure someone to disclose an experience of discrimination.

Days off

International Women’s Day is normally a Cambodian public holiday. The Royal Government determines the official annual list by sub-decree. Check workplace arrangements rather than assuming a substitute day off applies.
