The night of 31 December and 1 January mark the Gregorian year’s transition. This is separate from Khmer New Year in April.
When it happens
New Year’s Eve is 31 December and International New Year is 1 January in the Gregorian solar calendar, during Cambodia’s dry season. The transition into 2026 is the evening of 31 December 2025 into 1 January 2026; the transition into 2027 is 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027. The eve on 31 December 2027 leads into 2028. Countdowns generally occupy an evening; the listed New Year public holiday is 1 January. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 to reform earlier solar reckoning and was adopted at different times in different countries. The US Naval Observatory’s calendar reference explains its history and leap-year rules. Administrative use of 1 January coexists with Khmer New Year in April; the two have distinct calendar foundations and cultural roles.
Meaning
The Gregorian calendar begins its year on 1 January. Families can reflect on the year just ended and choose realistic goals for the next one. Customs differ, and some people prefer a quiet evening at home. Attending a countdown is optional rather than a requirement for welcoming the year.
Choose one small shared goal and a time to review it, allowing plans to change without blame.
Gatherings and care
In Cambodia, private gatherings and urban entertainment events may mark the evening. Check the organiser and plan a route home. Set an affordable budget and arrange a sober driver. Calling relatives or helping prepare a shared meal is also a meaningful way to participate, especially when travel or a late night would be difficult.
Work and days off
1 January is normally a Cambodian public holiday; 31 December is not automatically one. The Royal Government determines the official list annually by sub-decree. Confirm workplace and service arrangements before making plans.
