International Mother Language Day

21 February celebrates mother languages and linguistic diversity. Reading Khmer with children can go together with respect for the languages of other communities.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 21 February each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 21 February, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

UNESCO proclaimed International Mother Language Day in 1999, with observance beginning in 2000. As UNESCO and the UN explain, 21 February recalls the language movement in Dhaka in 1952. Its purpose is to support linguistic diversity and learning; Cambodian participation can combine care for Khmer with respect for other community languages.

Meaning

Language helps people learn, share knowledge and preserve family memory. The day encourages education that respects learners’ languages. Khmer has a central role in Cambodia, while different communities also maintain their own languages. A child’s accent should not be treated as a measure of intelligence, and someone learning a new language deserves patience rather than ridicule.

Invite an elder to choose a story and let children ask about new words without fear of criticism.

Taking part

Read a short Khmer story with a child or ask an elder to explain a less familiar word. Obtain permission before recording a family story. Welcome questions and correct mistakes kindly. A school activity can invite learners to share a word from home without requiring anyone to represent an entire community. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government sets official days off annually by sub-decree.
