International Literacy Day
8 September highlights reading and writing for people of all ages. Learning should preserve dignity rather than shame someone who cannot read.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 8 September each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 8 September, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
UNESCO proclaimed International Literacy Day in 1966, with annual observance beginning in 1967. UNESCO’s account presents reading and writing as foundations for learning and social participation. In Cambodia this history supports children and adults who missed educational opportunities, with respect for learners’ dignity and time.
Meaning
UNESCO promotes the day to highlight the importance of literacy. Reading and writing support learning, work and participation in society. In Cambodia, activities can include reading Khmer with children or helping an adult find learning opportunities suited to their schedule. Limited literacy may reflect missed opportunities for education rather than lack of ability. Respectful support starts by asking what the learner wants to do.
Short regular practice may suit work and care duties; learning slowly should not be treated as failure.
Learning with dignity
Choose a short text that interests the learner. Do not require someone to read aloud publicly if they are uncomfortable. When helping with a form, explain its contents and protect confidentiality. Schools or libraries can arrange shared reading with age-appropriate materials and space for questions. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government sets official days off annually by sub-decree.
