International Labour Day

1 May recognises workers’ contributions. Dignity at work and mutual respect are central themes.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 1 May each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 1 May, during the transition from dry to rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

The Library of Congress documents the eight-hour working-day movement and events in Chicago in May 1886, a central historical background to International Labour Day. For Cambodia, this history connects appreciation of workers with listening to practical concerns over safety, time and livelihoods.

Meaning

The day invites attention to the people whose work keeps production and services running. Cambodian employees, labourers and informal workers have different experiences. Appreciation is more useful when accompanied by listening to actual workplace concerns. Avoid assuming that everyone has the same conditions, a written employment arrangement or the ability to take time away from work.

Taking part

Families can share care duties and ask working relatives what support would help. A workplace can review how concerns are heard and how safety information is communicated. Specific employment rights require current official guidance and appropriate assistance; a short calendar article cannot establish the correct answer to an individual dispute or a particular pay calculation.

Days off

Labour Day is normally a Cambodian public holiday. The Royal Government confirms the annual list by sub-decree. People scheduled to work should check the applicable arrangements with their workplace rather than assume every service closes.
