International Day of Peace

21 September calls for peace and non-violence. It is distinct from Cambodia’s Peace Day on 29 December.

When it happens

This one-day observance falls on 21 September each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 21 September, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

The UN General Assembly established the International Day of Peace in 1981. In 2001 resolution 55/282 fixed it on 21 September as a day of non-violence and ceasefire. UN history gives it a global scope, distinct from Cambodia’s Peace Day on 29 December and its national historical foundation.

Meaning

This United Nations observance encourages reflection on living together without violence. In Cambodia, memories of war may give the theme a personal meaning. Respect people who do not wish to recount difficult experiences. A wish for peace should never be used to silence someone seeking protection from violence. Understanding a disagreement and protecting a person from harm are different responsibilities, both of which deserve care.

Children can learn the difference between disagreement and threats, and identify a trusted person for help.

Everyday practice

Listen without insults, teach children how to seek help and check information before sharing it. Avoid blaming an entire community for the actions of individuals. A school discussion can use clear facilitation and respect different views without excusing abuse. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government sets official days off through its annual sub-decree.
