International Day of Older Persons
1 October highlights older people’s rights and contributions. Respect includes listening to their choices rather than making every decision for them.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 1 October each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 1 October, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The UN General Assembly designated 1 October in 1990 through resolution 45/106, with the first observance in 1991. UN history connects respect for older people with rights, wellbeing and participation. In Cambodia, asking what support a person wants matters alongside customary family respect.
Meaning
Older people contribute knowledge, work and relationships to families and communities. Their abilities and needs vary. In Cambodia, living with grandchildren or living far from adult children can create different circumstances. Age alone does not mean that a person cannot learn, work or make decisions. The day encourages attention to rights and participation as well as practical support and companionship.
Thoughtful support
Ask what assistance is wanted before taking over. Offer transport, explain a document or teach a phone task at a comfortable pace. Obtain consent before recording life stories or sharing health information. Regular contact may matter more than a single gift ceremony. Make room for the person to decline an activity. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
