International Day for Biological Diversity
22 May highlights the diversity of life. Protecting biodiversity involves species, plants and their habitats.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 22 May each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 22 May, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
22 May recalls adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. In 2000 the UN General Assembly moved the observance from 29 December to 22 May, as the Convention’s history explains. The day thus has a treaty and educational foundation, beyond a single tree-planting event.
Meaning
Biodiversity includes variation within living species and across ecosystems. Cambodian examples include forests, rivers, wetlands and gardens close to home. Its value is not limited to famous rare animals. Insects, plants and less visible organisms also form part of the relationships that keep an ecosystem functioning. The day encourages learning about these connections rather than simply collecting a list of impressive species.
Elders can share local plant names for further checking, without treating this knowledge as instructions for self-treatment.
What you can do
Observe nature without catching or disturbing animals. Use local advice when choosing suitable plants, and do not release animals of unknown origin into lakes or streams. Listen to community knowledge and ask permission before recording it. A small observation activity can be useful without removing anything from a habitat. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off follow the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
