International Children’s Day in Cambodia
Cambodia observes International Children’s Day on 1 June. Listening to children and protecting their rights should continue beyond one day.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 1 June each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 1 June, during the rainy season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
Cambodia observes International Children’s Day on 1 June, documented in the Cambodian National Council for Children’s 2026 programme. An important foundation for understanding children’s rights is the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989, as UNICEF records. This supplies a rights framework without implying that the Convention established the 1 June date.
Meaning and date
Cambodia uses 1 June for International Children’s Day. This differs from the United Nations’ World Children’s Day on 20 November. Both provide opportunities to consider children’s rights, education, safety and participation. Giving gifts should not replace listening to children’s views and needs. Activities should include children with different abilities and circumstances, rather than recognising only those who perform or achieve publicly.
Children should be able to decline an uncomfortable activity and have an adult who will listen calmly.
Participation with protection
Let children help choose an age-appropriate reading, play or art activity. Seek permission for photographs and protect names, addresses and private information when sharing them. Do not require a child to recount distressing experiences publicly. Provide responsible supervision and a clear way to ask for help. The day is not automatically a Cambodian public holiday; consult the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
