Ghost Month and the Hungry Ghost Festival
The seventh Chinese lunar month is associated with remembering the dead in some communities. Zhongyuan observances around mid-month vary with religious tradition and family custom.
When it happens
Ghost Month is month seven of the Chinese lunisolar calendar: day one opens the month and day fifteen is the central festival. In 2026 the month runs 13 August–10 September, with the festival on 27 August. In 2027 it runs 2–31 August, with the festival on 16 August. Both fall in Cambodia’s rainy season. Community ceremonies may be scheduled elsewhere within that month. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The festival brings together ancestral remembrance, Taoist observance and the Buddhist account of Mulian rescuing his mother. The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre records observance among Chinese communities there from the late 1800s and growth in public entertainment from the mid-1900s. These dates document that community’s history, rather than the festival’s arrival in Cambodia. Chinese-Cambodian households maintain their own lineage and religious arrangements.
Timing and beliefs
The beginning of the seventh month and the festival on its fifteenth day are distinct calendar points. In some Chinese traditions, the period includes offerings for ancestors and spirits without relatives to remember them. Taoist and Buddhist interpretations and ceremonies differ. Accounts about spirits should be clearly presented as beliefs, rather than evidence that an unseen danger will harm people who do not follow a particular custom.
Observance in Cambodia
Some Chinese-Cambodian families arrange food, incense and offerings according to household custom. The time and location vary, and some households do not observe the period. Performances documented in another country should not automatically be presented as Cambodian practice. This Chinese observance is also distinct from Khmer Kan Ben and Pchum Ben, even though remembrance of the dead provides a point of comparison.
Respect and care
If visiting, ask before joining a ritual or moving an offering. Avoid using stories about spirits to frighten children. Listen to family memories or help someone in need within your means. Use permitted burning areas, keep walkways clear and protect nearby flammable materials. Consider neighbours with different beliefs and remove waste afterwards. Respectful coexistence does not require every person to accept the same religious explanation.
Discussing beliefs courteously
Children may ask about offerings or a chosen date. Explain that these are beliefs and customs observed by some people, without demanding fear or agreement. Avoid mocking unfamiliar practices. Someone of another faith can show respect by listening and not interrupting, even without joining the ritual. Courteous questions support coexistence.
Work and days off
Ghost Month and Zhongyuan are not generally Cambodian public holidays. The Royal Government sets the official list annually by sub-decree. Ask the family about its actual schedule rather than assuming that a month of religious significance means continuous time away from work.
