The Library of Congress describes Sonora Smart Dodd’s efforts and the Spokane observance in 1910. Permanent US legislative recognition followed in 1972, and the third-Sunday-in-June rule appears in federal law. This explains the calendar entry without prescribing how Khmer families, with their own traditions and experiences, should honour a father.
Meaning and differences
The date follows the United States observance and is not universal worldwide. Cambodian families may choose to contact or remember a father or another caregiver. Do not assume every household has a father present or the same relationship with him. Choosing not to post publicly does not show a lack of respect. The occasion should allow room for bereavement, distance and different family arrangements.
Thoughtful activities
Help with a task, listen to a life story or spend time together in a way the person enjoys. Ask before arranging a surprise and avoid pressure for expensive gifts. Respect a wish not to discuss private memories. Children should be free to appreciate a caregiver they choose.
