Earth Day
22 April encourages care for the Earth. Small actions sustained over time can connect environmental messages with everyday life.
When it happens
This one-day observance falls on 22 April each year in the Gregorian calendar. In both 2026 and 2027 it is 22 April, during the dry season in Cambodia. Schools, communities and institutions may schedule related activities on another day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
History
The first Earth Day took place in 1970. In 2009 the UN General Assembly proclaimed 22 April International Mother Earth Day through resolution 63/278. UN history distinguishes the earlier public movement from later international recognition; both encourage attention to relationships between human life and the environment.
Meaning
The United Nations recognises the date as International Mother Earth Day. It invites attention to the relationship between people and natural systems. Cambodian households can begin with familiar concerns such as litter, wasted food and care for nearby surroundings. A useful contribution does not require waiting for a large project, but a single event should not be presented as solving a complex environmental problem.
Assign tasks according to ability, allowing people unable to join physically to help with planning.
Actions that can continue
Choose one manageable issue and review progress later. For a public clean-up, obtain permission and arrange proper collection of the waste. Keep children away from broken glass and unidentified objects. Making the place cleaner matters more than photographing participation. Consider who will maintain the improvement after the event. This is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; official days off are set by the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree.
