Dragon Boat Festival and Rice Dumplings

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth Chinese lunar month. For some Chinese-Cambodian families, rice dumplings and sharing with relatives are central features.

When it happens

The festival falls on day five of month five in the Chinese lunisolar calendar: 19 June 2026 and 9 June 2027, during Cambodia’s rainy season. The central observance lasts one day, with dumpling preparation and family gatherings sometimes preceding it. Organised races may follow a separate schedule. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

UNESCO inscribed the Dragon Boat Festival in 2009. Its documentation describes differing commemorative figures, narratives and local practices, so no single story should be imposed as the origin of every custom. The year 2009 marks recognition, rather than the festival’s beginning. In some Chinese-Cambodian households, making rice dumplings continues food knowledge and family relationships across generations.

Meaning and background

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu, includes varied regional traditions. UNESCO inscribed it as intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Different communities connect it with different remembered figures and stories, so a single origin should not be imposed on every custom. It is distinct from Cambodia’s Water Festival in Kattik, despite both occasions being associated with boats and community participation.

Rice dumplings and family

Some Chinese-Cambodian households make or buy bachang: leaf-wrapped glutinous-rice dumplings with fillings that vary by family. They may share them with relatives or friends, or include them in household observances. Do not assume that boat races take place throughout Cambodia on this date. Asking a host what the occasion means to their family is more respectful than treating one regional practice as a universal rule.

Participation and care

Ask to learn how dumplings are wrapped or help prepare ingredients with clean hands and utensils. Check fillings with anyone who has dietary restrictions or allergies. Sharing food should remain affordable and voluntary. If attending an actual race, respect barriers and keep children away from exposed water edges. Explain associated legends as traditional accounts, separating them from facts that can be documented historically.

Learning through food

Making dumplings can bring elders and children together. Assign suitable tasks and keep children away from boiling water and sharp tools. Ask how a family recipe differs without judging one version as superior. Obtain permission before photographing or publishing someone’s recipe, and acknowledge the person who taught you.

Work and days off

The Dragon Boat Festival is not generally a Cambodian public holiday. The Royal Government sets official days off by annual sub-decree. Confirm any private gathering or local event with its organiser, since a calendar listing does not establish that a public celebration is planned.
