Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Many Christians celebrate Christmas on 25 December, with some services beginning the previous evening. In Cambodia, religious observance and festive decoration should be distinguished respectfully.

When it happens

This calendar marks Christmas Day on 25 December and Christmas Eve on 24 December in the Gregorian calendar: 24–25 December in both 2026 and 2027, during Cambodia’s dry season. The evening of the 24th may include worship; the 25th is the feast and a time for gatherings according to church programmes. Some denominations follow different calendars, so confirm with the church being visited. The app calendar shows the date for each year.

History

The Library of Congress and Britannica record observance of 25 December in Rome in 336 as an early attestation of Christmas on that date. This documents celebration rather than proving Jesus’ actual birthday. Worship, family gatherings and gift customs subsequently developed in varied community forms; Cambodian participation should respect both believers and those who do not join religious observance.

Meaning

Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus in Christian belief. 25 December is a traditional celebration date, not a historically verified birthday. Churches follow different programmes. In Cambodia, some people attend worship and gather with relatives, while some non-Christian participants enjoy decorations or exchanging gifts. These forms of participation should not be treated as evidence that everyone shares the same religious belief.

Ask a host about food or ceremonial expectations without assuming that all churches follow identical customs.

Participating respectfully

If visiting a church, ask about the time, clothing and participation. Respect anyone who declines a religious act. Offer a simple greeting, help with a meal or contact a distant relative. Avoid making expensive gifts an obligation. Christmas is not generally a Cambodian public holiday; the Royal Government sets official days off annually by sub-decree. Check private workplace arrangements directly.
