Chol Vossa: Beginning of the Rains Retreat
Chol Vossa begins the monastic rains retreat. Lay supporters help provide for the monastery and may deepen their own practice.
When it happens
Chol Vossa begins on the first waning day of Asadh and lasts three lunar months in the rainy season. The later Asadh applies in a double-month year. AKP records the 2026 opening on 30 July. Confirm the 2027 opening against the Khmer calendar and monastery notice. Candle-offering programmes may take place the preceding evening or on a separately arranged day. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
Taking the day after the Asadh full moon in the 2027 table gives 19 July 2027 as a planning date. Confirm against the official Khmer calendar and monastery before announcing a ceremony.
Meaning
Vassa is a period of residence in a designated place during the rainy season under the monastic discipline. In the usual Cambodian cycle it begins on the first waning day of Asadh, after Asalha Bochea, and lasts three lunar months. In a year with two Asadh months, the later month is relevant. Residence during the retreat does not mean that monks cease religious activity or that every kind of movement is prohibited.
History
The retreat is grounded in the Vinaya, which describes rains residence and permitted temporary absences. The Pali Text Society places the traditional writing down of the Theravada canon in the first century BCE. In Cambodia, AKP’s 4 July 2025 report documents candle and material offerings supporting resident monks for three months. Together these sources distinguish the early disciplinary foundation from continuing Khmer practice.
Monastics and lay supporters
For monastics, the retreat supports study, meditation and life within a resident community. The discipline includes detailed rules and allowances concerning temporary absence. A lay visitor should not judge a monk’s observance from a single encounter without understanding those provisions. For householders, the season offers an opportunity to support practical needs and establish a realistic routine of ethical conduct or learning that can continue beyond a special ceremony.
Cambodian customs
Families may offer rains-retreat candles, food, household supplies and other items needed by a monastery. Some pagodas arrange regular chanting or teaching during the season. Ask what is needed before purchasing a large quantity, since repeated donations of the same item may be less helpful than modest practical support. Participation need not involve an elaborate procession or spending beyond a family’s means, and local customs should not be treated as universal requirements.
Practice for families
Choose a manageable routine, such as reading a teaching, meditating briefly or helping someone each week. Adapt it to age, health, work and caring duties. Ask an elder about their memories of the retreat season. At a monastery, preserve quiet and follow instructions for placing candles safely. Avoid promises that a certain donation guarantees a particular spiritual result, and do not pressure relatives or colleagues to contribute money.
Organising practical support
Ask a monastery which needs recur and which can wait. Coordinating visits may avoid excess food on one day and insufficient support on another. Explain the purpose and responsibility before collecting group donations. People unable to give money can contribute time or work without being devalued. Explain quiet areas to children and do not enter rooms or move equipment without permission. Maintaining a good relationship includes following instructions and accepting schedule changes, rather than disrupting practice to photograph a donation.
Work and days off
Chol Vossa does not require lay people to stop working for three months and is not automatically a public holiday. Cambodia’s official days off are set by the Royal Government’s annual sub-decree. Check the monastery’s programme separately from your workplace calendar.
