Chenh Vossa and Pavarana
Chenh Vossa marks the completion of the rains retreat. Pavarana concerns inviting sincere correction within the monastic community.
When it happens
Chenh Vossa falls on the fifteenth waxing day of Assuj, after three lunar months of residence, near the end of the rains, usually in October. The principal observance is one day, though public activities may begin the preceding evening or follow a monastery’s chosen programme. Confirm the 2026 and 2027 civil dates in the Khmer lunar calendar; monastic Pavarana and public gatherings may have different times. The app calendar shows the date for each year.
The lunar tables consulted place the Assuj full moon on 26 October 2026 and 15 October 2027; these are planning dates. Confirm against the official Khmer calendar and monastery before announcing a ceremony.
Timing and meaning
In the usual Cambodian cycle, Chenh Vossa is observed on the fifteenth waxing day of Assuj, following the three-month rains retreat. It marks the completion of that period of residence, rather than an end to monastic study or practice. Lay people can use the occasion to reflect on commitments made during the retreat and decide which useful habits they can realistically continue in ordinary daily life.
History
The close of the retreat is associated with Pavarana, set out in Vinaya Khandhaka 4. Monks invite correction over matters seen, heard or suspected, supporting accountability and communal harmony. These rules belong to the Pali textual tradition, which the Pali Text Society says was committed to writing in the first century BCE. That is historical context for the discipline, without assigning a founding year to each Cambodian monastery’s festival customs.
Understanding Pavarana
Pavarana is a monastic disciplinary procedure in which monks invite correction concerning conduct that has been seen, heard or suspected. Its purpose concerns accountability and harmony within the Sangha. It is not a public invitation for visitors to criticise monks during a ceremony. Lay attendees should respect the time and space reserved for monastic proceedings and follow the monastery’s arrangements for any activities open to the wider community.
Observance and the Kathina season
Lay supporters may offer food, listen to Dhamma or join a locally arranged ceremony. The Kathina robe-offering season follows the retreat and lasts a defined lunar month. Chenh Vossa and the particular Kathina day chosen by a monastery are therefore not automatically the same date. Confirm the pagoda’s timetable before organising a group visit, arranging transport or collecting supplies for a later offering.
What you can do
A family discussion can consider how to receive advice courteously without pretending to reproduce a monastic disciplinary ceremony. Listen without immediately becoming defensive and apologise when you have harmed someone. At a pagoda, wear respectful clothing and ask before taking photographs. Help older people with seating and transport. Do not make a long visit or overnight stay a test of commitment for someone with limited strength or other responsibilities.
Reflecting on what can continue
At the retreat’s end, consider which habits helped create a calmer and more attentive life. Continue manageable reading or regular contact with an elder rather than retaining every commitment regardless of work and health. A sustainable practice is more useful than a large promise that cannot be kept. In family discussion, do not force public admissions of wrongdoing. Pavarana is a monastic procedure, not a formula for judging everyone. Direct Vinaya questions to a monk at an appropriate time.
Work and days off
Chenh Vossa is a religious observance and is not automatically a public holiday. The Royal Government’s annual sub-decree determines official days off. Ask the monastery about the timing of its public activities, particularly if you need to fit a visit around work or care duties.
